There’s nothing quite like rolling your own custom D20 and landing a natural 20. The thrill is even better when the die carries something of your character: a favourite colour, a party crest or a few carefully chosen letters. A little piece of your adventure, right there in your hand.
This guide was originally written by Chris Daniels and published by DND Den in February 2023. We’ve updated the original five-step process for our 2026 custom D20 offering, including the current materials, price and personalisation options.
How do I make a custom D20 right now?
Use our Custom D&D Dice page to choose a material and tell us what you’d like engraved. The price is US$49.99 for one personalised D20. Your text or design replaces your choice of the natural-20 or natural-1 face, with gold-coloured engraving. This is a single twenty-sided die, rather than a complete polyhedral set.
You don’t need to know how to cast resin or engrave stone. This guide is about commissioning a personalised die: choosing its look, preparing your idea and checking the details before ordering. We review and arrange custom orders manually, so you can ask for advice if your design needs a little help.
1. Choose your face and material
First choose Natural 20 or Natural 1 on the ordering page. Your design replaces that one numeral. Then choose the material below it. Both face options cost the same.
Start with the colour and mood that suit your character. A Bard might love the soft pink of Rose Quartz; an arcane scholar could be drawn to Amethyst; Tiger’s Eye has a warm, earthy look that feels at home beside a well-travelled character sheet. These are aesthetic suggestions, not rules about who can roll which dice.
The current form offers twelve choices:
- Rose Quartz
- Amethyst
- Garnet Glass
- Tiger’s Eye
- Blue Glass
- Green Glass
- Blue Sandstone
- Labradorite
- Blue Cat’s Eye
- Green Cat’s Eye
- Obsidian
- Bloodstone
Use the image cards on the ordering page to compare them and select your favourite. The range includes both stone and glass options; trade names should not be taken as a promise that every option is a naturally occurring gemstone. Colour, pattern and translucency can vary from the examples. For a broader comparison, read our guide to dice materials and care.

2. The big choice: words, a symbol, or both?
A monogram is a simple way to make a die personal. Initials, a short character name or a meaningful date can turn it into a gift with a story. A symbol can say just as much: your party’s crest, a familiar’s silhouette or an emblem you’ve designed for your campaign.
You can provide text, upload an image, or include both. If you combine them, use the notes box to explain the layout you have in mind. Imagine the design on a small triangular face, not filling a computer screen. A bold shape with a little space around it is usually easier to recognise than a crowded scene.
3. The monogram option
Enter the exact wording you want in the text box. Check spelling, capitals and dates carefully. The old guide described a four-letter option; that is not a rule for the current form. Short wording still tends to work best on such a small surface, and we’ll contact you if the request needs clarifying before production.
Your character’s initials, an anniversary date or the name your adventuring party finally agreed on are all good places to start. If a longer phrase matters to you, include it with an alternative in the notes rather than assuming tiny lettering will stay readable.

4. The custom image option
Upload a small, simple black-and-white image. A clear silhouette, clean line drawing or original crest gives the engraving a strong starting point.
Use artwork you own or have permission to reproduce. Your own campaign emblem is a particularly good fit: it belongs to your story without needing a famous logo to do the work. You can add notes explaining which part of the image matters most, or how text should sit beside it.
The uploaded file and wording stay with your order for our manual review and fulfilment. They are not added to a public product gallery. If anything is unclear, we’ll contact you using the details supplied at checkout.

5. Make your chosen face your own
Choose either the natural-20 or natural-1 face for your custom design. Your design replaces that numeral, while the other numbered faces remain part of the die.
A triumphant party crest, a tiny celebratory message or an emblem for your character’s biggest moments can all feel right on the natural-20 face. A cheeky familiar or a symbol of your character’s spectacular mishaps could suit the natural-1 face. Let your group know what the custom face represents before you roll. Personalisation changes the appearance, not your chance of a critical hit.
Review your design and place your order
- Check the selected face, material and quantity. Each US$49.99 item is one custom D20.
- Confirm the exact text, attached artwork and any layout notes.

- Continue to secure checkout to provide your contact, delivery and payment details.
Custom orders are reviewed and fulfilled personally. Shipping updates are handled manually rather than through automatic tracking messages. If you need the die for a birthday, proposal or a particular game night, contact us before ordering to check current expectations for your destination. The form is quick to complete; production and delivery take longer.
Keep your confirmation email and check our shipping and returns information. When your die arrives, roll it on a padded tray and store it away from hard metal dice to help protect its surfaces.
Personalise your next adventure
A custom D20 makes a thoughtful character, party or campaign gift because the design comes from you. Whether you choose a simple pair of initials or the crest of a party that has survived far too many suspicious doors, you’re giving your next triumph or plot twist a story of its own.
